Running "Blind" Blackjack Simulations with Boris
This is a good example of the special customized features added to Boris as requested by many advanced and professional Blackjack players.
In addition to playing Blackjack manually, Boris for Blackjack (Advanced and higher Editions) is equipped with an operational feature known as high-speed Blind-Simulation Mode. In this mode you can run a pre-setup .ENV (Environment) file to "Blindly" accumulate statistics relating to the player mix declared in that file. The data/results you will glean from the F1, F2, F3 & F4 stats alone, will help you to remove any blinders you may have about the efficacy of a given method.Running a blind simulation is really not all that difficult once you identify WHAT it is you want to simulate, and what results you are looking for, As a researcher and writer, I find this part easy and fun to do. I love to ask "what if" questions and then chase them down with a Blind Simulation run. A new web-section: Blind Simulations with Boris on Boris' website has just gone online. As I run more "what if" scenarios in 2007, I will publish them there. Once a folder structure is setup, Boris software users will be able to D/L the .ENV file sets that I used, allowing you to replicate those findings further.
The major steps in setting up your own Blind-Simulations are:
- Modify the settings of an existing .ENV file, or choose a casino "from scratch".
- Make any needed changes in the shuffle/wash/table settings by way of the Casino Management (Ctrl-R) Screen in Boris.
- Make any changes to the mix of players by using the Player Setup (Ctrl-P) Screen.
- Save these changes into a NEW .ENV file.
- Declare a GAME # from the Options menu. I often use Game#-1001.
- Declare the number of rounds to run (from the options menu).
- Click on the Run Simulation button on the Container Screen, and away you go!
The blind simulation I ran to make up the above-named web section came from taking the Aladdin8Deck.ENV file (provided in the Boris installation) and modifying its various settings to create the set of files needed to run all the various tests.
It is important to note, that simulations will not run if there is a manual player at the table. So, if you use one of the provided .ENV files, remember to turn the manual player at seat 4 into something else; say, a Basic Strategy player.
Boris Professional PLUS (BorisPLU) users will soon have access to Boris' Blackjack Script runner. Blackjack scripts will allow you to run a set of .ENV file tests consecutively from a list you declare in the BJScript.Ini file. When Boris is expanded to use .ENV2 files, the script facility will take on yet a new dimension of capability.
